I was in a rented condo in VT over weekend, and they supplied this wood for the fireplace. Can't figure out what it is.... kinda heavy (aka prolly still green!). Any ideas what it is?

I'm thinking sugar maple. Did all of the splits fit in your vehicle for the drive home? Ha! Cheers!

I must admit, I thought about it!! The wife found it "amusing" I was immediately drawn to the wood shed!

I spent some time looking at ash today, also my silver maple before dark.
I'd say almost with full certainty that wood is silver maple.

Definitely maple. Since I only have sugar, can't tell whether sugar or other variety, but could be sugar and is maple. Love the grain.

It's definately maple, but I'm leaning towards sugar....

Condo was on 1st floor, so I didn't need the hoist, this time! ;)

I should have added, there was some mold/moss on the bark, that is what those dark green spots are....

The fact that is heavy and the look of the bark make me think sugar maple. Also when sugar maple seasons it has that exact color to it. One of the best all around firewoods IMO.

Nice to see you had your priorities in line (inspecting the woodshed and stock) upon arrival there!!

Looks like sugar to me also. It Doesn't quite have the appearance of red maple and I don't think that silver maple is that prevalent in VT, at least at higher elevations.
