Does sassafras make good firewood? I’ve never come across any in my years of cutting firewood.

    It's OK as shoulder wood.

While we’re on the topic, Chatting with the Buzzsaw he informed me Sass is a rot resistant wood. That’s something I never knew or noticed. Was a little shocked by that factoid.

Yes. They actually sell sassafras trim and decking boards. Google it. I was surprised. When i was researching BL i learned about it. Mills that sell BL also sell sassy.

Indeed it is. We've made many fence posts from it. It may not last as long as locust but it does well if you can find straight trees! That is the biggest problem.

I can certainly attest to the crookedness of Sassafras. Never think of lumber when I look at the ones around here LOL
My moms a big fan. She’ll complain if she doesn’t get enough Sass in her wood supply.

Only have a few sass trees on the property and one of them died this year. Gonna have to get a service to take it down. Top had grown into a cherry tree and its entangled. Woodpeckers enjoying it for now.

Thanks for passing that tip along. Last night when I got off work I pulled over on route 9 to grab a couple logs off the side of the highway. There was a dead and mostly barkless Sassafras that came down in Isaias that I thought would be a goner, but after getting it home and splitting it not only was it solid, it was dry as a bone already. More shoulder wood for the stacks :)

That’s all Brad. Been around Sass my whole life and never knew. I would have thought just the opposite.
I can blame my mother. No Sassafras trees ever lay around long enough to rot. :)

I never knew it until i started researching BL last year. Although i did notice 1-2 year rounds/logs that lost their bark didnt seem to have any rot on the wood.
