Just got my Fiskars X27 last night and had to split a couple before the sun went completely down. I have not split wood in over 20 years, which is significant since I am in my mid-30s, so I was worried about my swing and impressing my 11 year old son. First round exploded in half with a very satisfying pop. I have a feeling that all of the research before this purchase is going to pay off. The boy and I are going to spend a significant portion of the weekend splitting, and trying to not get hurt. If everything goes well I will report back next week, hopefully with some pictures. Thanks to everyone on this thread, and a few others, for the information for this new firewood hoarder. Stay frosty.
Welcome to the FHC HighCountry ! You're gonna love that x27! So, I see you know about the photo thing
My wife bought a Fiskars for me yesterday from Lowes. I could not find x27 on it anywhere (it is a full 36" long though). I used it on some 20" knotty Locust, as well as a bunch of Walnut, Persimon, and Red Oak knotty pieces that my regular maul would not split, and anything the Fiskars wouldn't split, it would cut. Very happy with it so far. I really like the blade protector as well.
It sounds like you got the one with the all black handle. The X-27 has a bit of softer orange material on the end of the handle that is supposed to give a better grip. For the extra $10+ I settled for the all black handle myself.
Member since 2013. Received as a Christmas gift. Long time supporter of Fiskars products. Have had some back issues through my years and shied away from bigger logs after an incident involving some 24" oak splitting vertically with splitter. Now I use the X27 to quarter stuff I can't lift, then finish with hydraulics.
Ye trusty old TSC Hotblast. Liked my old Suburban better, but its keeping me warm. Edit: most of those will be split again via hydraulic splitter. That's just where I make them a manageable size there.
Had a great day on Saturday splitting with the X27. Took it pretty slow, as I haven't split wood by hand for quite a while, but got enough split to be satisfied. Looking forward to many more days of hand splitting.
Well I decided to get the X27 Fiskers and I have to say I am impressed so far. So all you guys out there, you were right.
Hey Jack, I have lower back issues from time to time ( eroded lower disc) but have felt better after splitting too! I think it helps decompress(stretch) the spine out with the weight swinging of the head. My back always feels better after a session of splitting vs cutting and loading logs which compresses the spine. So I split a few minutes with a maul at the end of the day for my back to feel better plus I get a little more done!
