Working with a guy the past 3 weeks I hadn't seen in several years,we worked a few jobs together starting almost 20 years back, always got along great..About a year younger than me,married with an adult son, likes his beer & is an old hard rocker :dex:.Anyway we were talking on Wednesday about growing up in the 70's - we liked go karts, our Stingray bicycles, mini bikes, small engines & causing mayhem in general.;) He remembered for years I was a tree cutter/firewood/chainsaw nut & mentioned having this "very old, heavy McCulloch saw that's loud, fast & totally bad azz!!" A friend gave it to him after finding it on a pile of trash in the suburbs a while back being THROWN OUT on clean up dayo_O....Randy said it runs good, but leaked gas, that scared him so he stopped using it.He thought it was mid-late 60's,but had no idea,I said I'd check the internet sources & let him know what it was.

He mustve read my mind cause he said "I'll bring tomorrow & maybe you might want it...Didn't want to give a yes or no until I seen it in person. He cleaned it up & brought it tonight. "I'll give ya $35 for it,is that OK since I'll need to spend a few bucks & time locating a new fuel line/filter & maybe other minor tinkering.." Sure, that's fine,I was just gonna give it to ya anyway!! If you cant get it fixed,I'll give your money back....I said that wont be necessary.... Its a Pro Mac 55,a 57cc lightweight powerhouse with decompression valve, chain brake & 16" original bar.Made from 1973 to 1977,will pull up to a 28" bar.I think I did OK. :dex::saw:  :D

I had an old one, I don't recall the actual size. I got it mail order from Montgomery Wards. Long bar, very heavy. But very dependable. I used it for about 15 years to cut up my 5 cords every year. Then it set except for the occasional tree cutting to trim up my wooded property. It got to be too heavy so I gave it and my All nighter stove to my son when he bought a house. He runs the saw every year. While he says it is heavy, it still delivers. I bought a light saw just for trimming up and for fire pit wood. Haven't been able to use it this year, but maybe next year I'll be back on my feet and able to use it again.

It's weird how things play out sometimes. Great story, glad you got something good out of this despite that saw being on its death bed one day. We could call you Frankenstein

When I was 15 I had a go cart that I raced. It had twin 55 Macs on it. On top of that, each Mac had 2 carbs running on Alky and Steens Oil. The original sit-down, shut up and hang on mobile............

I got one of those in a group buy of 8 or 10 saws I did up between Baltimore and York, PA. The seller said it ran, but needed a new clutch.

Got it home and pulled the clutch cover to find the chain off the rim. Put the chain back on and away it went. Less than a 2 minute fix and I was back in business.
