Based on your initial MM reading you are at 15.9 on the first piece and 16.1 on the second.

What kind of surface temp is the wood showing? Do you have an IR thermometer?

Didn't check the temp, yes I do. If I would wager a guess probably 72ish deg.

    Weight 25.0 LB

    5 lbs water lost / .2230Pts % = 22.42 %pts lost

    30% MC original - 22.42% lost = 7.58 % current MC

    Piece #2

    Weight when cut = 29.6

    %MC - 30% per MM

    29.6 / 130 = .228 parts of wood and water

    100 * .228 = 22.8 lbs of wood

    29.6-25.8 = 3.8Lb water lost

    3.8/ .228 = 16.6 %pts lost

    30-16.6 = 13.4% current MC

Starting weight was 29 lb, loss of 4 pounds. So it's moisture content is going to be about what the other piece is.

Try running your meter every 1/4 inch from the outside in. I have to think that the outside is going to be a lot drier than the inside.

So this ended a bit different than i thought it would, I split the heavier one. It was dry enough to be miserable, stringy dammed Hackberry. My 5ton Homelite electric in the stove room wouldnt do it so i had to go out and use the gas machine. The pics tell the tale, as Paul bunion thought the inside was still significantly more wet than the outside. 14% in the sapwood and 26-27% in the heartwood... This is my first try at this and next time might try another species and pay closer attention to temperature of the wood, i honestly cant recall the temp the day i cut them. Its sad because i knew it was a factor but was so excited to start the fun that i forgot to take it into account. Well hers the:ithappened:or it didnt happen right. 20160117_120232.jpg 20160117_120259.jpg 20160117_120335.jpg 20160117_120347.jpg
