A buddy called me up a few days ago to tell me he found some dead maple on the side of the road. I couldn't make it out to him immediately, so he said he'd grab it for me. Yesterday I headed over to his place and not only did he take it, but he bucked it to 16 inches for me. What a pal! Easiest scrounge I've had in years. He threw in some logs from a small tree he took down in his back yard as well. I'm thinking it's maybe hickory... maybe some help with an ID? It's the two logs in the center closest to the tailgate. The leaves were spade shaped.
Great friend and even greater score. Dead maple looks like beech. Looks hickoryish, possibly black walnut with minimal dark heartwood? I have little experience with BW. BW will have a chambered center pith and hickory has no pith. Just don't be pithed off if it turns out to be BW!
I thought so too, but the best I can zoom in on the bark it had a walnutty look to it. I have very little experience cutting it as a rare scrounge for me. They are around but on the scarce side in these parts. When you split it give it a good sniff rainking63. It smells like iodine.
I actually have plenty of black walnut in the woodpile. In the picture, the tree that is straight ahead just above the truck cargo light is black walnut. It's on my neighbor's property but I pick up the fallen limbs for firewood from time to time. Also there's about a thousand walnuts in their green rinds that I have to throw into the brush pile so that I don't mow over them. But what I'm saying is that the stuff in the truck doesn't look like the walnut that I've split over the years. I'll give it a split and a whiff.
I didn't notice any particular odor when split. The wood was a little bit stringy but not difficult to split.
Congratulations on an easy scrounge Your friend deserves an attaboy also. Cut to any consistent size is always a huge plus! A size you like makes stacking much easier and more stable
That looks a lot like something in the populus genus, possibly a hybrid poplar. Did it smell unpleasant?
I've gotten young green ash that looked a lot like that, including the darker core at times. Is the center pith hollow by any chance?
Thats hickory. I forgot to mention BW splits very easily and clean, well at least the stuff I've processed.
