With your great attitude, love of saws and wood you will never fit in here! Just kidding....welcome and enjoy!
Kyle Mulligan, Welcome to the site. nice first post. Especially, for us "picture loading challenged".
He will be 11 in March. He's been helping me haul and stack for years, this past year he wanted to try splitting. I got him a 2.5 pound maul from Tractor Supply so he could take a few swings. He worked this summer on his technique and he could split the smaller stuff after awhile. Maybe in a few years he can take my place!
I was wondering if there was anyone from this area. Great to meet you. You must be in the Amsterdam area.
That is great. It's a good feeling when they want to do what your doing. My oldest brought home the hatchet I used when I was a kid a few years ago and I get that proud papa feeling every time he uses it. When do you think you will let him use a saw?
I was a little confused on the pics. I see I got multiples of a few. I wasn't sure if I wanted thumbnails or full images? I'll learn, I have plenty of pictures in my phone.
Well we were cutting in early November, a nice tree that had blown down that was really easy to cut. I seriously thought about letting him cut the top then, no technical issues at all. Then I realized he was wearing shorts! So sometime soon when I'm out cutting probably this spring I'll give him a go. I got a new saw for Christmas that's a bit smaller and lighter than mine, a 14 inch bar, and I think I'll let him start on that. How old are your kids?
Welcome Kyle Mulligan glad to have you here... Anyone notice the new guys are saying hello in threads with pics and great stuff and good stories.
Nice, I am familiar with it. Is there others from our area on the site? What do you think about the mild winter we are having?
I have 2 boys, 8 and 4. And a baby red head girl who will be 1 next week. I have thought about letting my oldest hold a running saw but I don't think he is aware of the possible repercussions yet. I think 11,12 is a good age. Let me know how it works with your son so I can have a point of reference.
Well with 3, including an almost one year old, I'm sure it's hard to find time for a lot of things, wood included. I didn't think my son was ready for a saw until recently, and even now only under close supervision with real easy cutting. Hopefully he will like it. I never ran a saw until I was 25 when I bought the house I'm in now and it had a wood stove. I'm hoping he'll learn much younger and take an interest that lasts a long time.
