That point seems to be lost on many people, there will come a day and I hope I never see it, that climate change will be painfully obvious.
The problem with the regulatory agencies is they dont always have the best intentions.
I think someone mentioned the toxic water dump into the river in Col. by the EPA, that may end up costing taxpayers 27 million dollars.

That something I dont get, why does it cost the tax payers, what happened to the millions in fines they collected over the years?

I think this statement pretty well sums up the on going theme of this thread. From a simple man such as I am point of view that means we need police to police the police??? Where does it end? Without trying to turn this into a political bottle busting fight, I believe that there is way to much intervention in the name of keeping us safe from ourselves to last a millennium. I am by no means advocating an anarchistic based society but rather a golden rule society or rule of law as it may be. As some one stated earlier it may be a cultural problem. Folks that are to afraid to confront their neighbors (in a reasonable and responsible manner) when those neighbors are infringing on your living on this planet as a human being. I have always lived out in the country away from the city so the fact that there is smoke in the air from one type of far or another is not something I have had to much thinking about. In fact, it is common practice for those who farm around me to tear out a fence line full of brush and trees and lite that pile up and most often they will throw in some old tars to make sure it keeps burning. Do I think that is right? No, but then my life has been lived in a glass house so I choose not to throw stones. Sides that, farmer Brown down the road with a big smokin ditch far is some one who may help me outta a big jamb some day and he has paid huge amounts of money and time for land and equipment so that the masses can obtain reasonably priced food to eat. I guess we cant have it both ways when it comes to some things in life.
There is certainly a need for agencies such as the EPA and OSHA and others but what you do when the squeaky wheels of bureaucracy run over your toes is totally up to you.
Sorry for the wordy post. I am gonna go outside into the cold and beat a dead horse now.:D

That's the point. It always costs the taxpayer because that's where all the money comes from in the first place. Whether from the gov. or a corp in the form of fines, it's the taxpayer, who is always the consumer, that ends up paying for it either directly or indirectly in the end. Earlier when I mentioned adding another agency called the Dept. of Common Sense, that was a joke, sarcasm. Actually I'd like to see several of the agencies be merged and so we can get rid of some of the agencies altogether. Some the Departments can go altogether. I agree a lot with Boomstick where he states that what we need is personal responsibility and it's also "cultural". Changing the cultural is exactly what we need. And moving it towards personal responsibility would fix most of our problems anyway. Isn't there an old saying that states, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". If only we could enforce the "Golden Rule", but then again that in itself would be contradicting. Great discussion guys, fixes nothing but great to get a chance to "blow some smoke".

Sounds good in theory but in practice it's a tuff nut to crack, worked a long time and met a lot of people who dont seem to care about anything but themselves.

I am sure any of you here that have had to deal with the general public know that hoping for personal responsibility these days is high wishful thinking. Its almost like the masses want more oversight without even realizing it, like they feel safe sucking off the gvmt teet in one way or another.

I know this is a bit off base but I am reminded of people who get mad at me when I am holding up traffic as a volunteer firefighter. I feel like it is part of the same mentality.
