We (he) pours the entire bag in, bottom of bag and all. Is that a mistake and a repair in the making?

It shouldn't be, depending on the design of the auger. If it's made of solid steel, it should be OK. Quads use a type of "spring" auger and might have a difficult time with excessive fines.

That said, I stopped using the vacuum pellet cleaner after my older daughter was out of the house for college.....she was the one that had the dust issues. Then I carefully dumped the whole bag right in (cut top off w/ utility knife, hold top closed, turn upside down & lower to bottom of hopper and then pull the bag up slowly).

My Astoria and 10-cpm just chewed the fines up and dumped them into the fire pot...... it made nice sparkles.

Behind the green tape is 4" nails. I wonder if i could use the central vac instead of the shopvac.

You have to be careful you don't have too much vacuum.....it will just suck pellets into the vac instead of just dust. That's why the original design called for a small shop vac. I added the adjustable air port so I could "fine tune" the vacuum level to my shop vac's power.

    True
There's a screen for the carry over, placed my hand under when I shut off the vac to see if any debris fell down. None:thumbs:

Your SBI unit has a dual auger system and both are horizontal (screw/cylinder type) feed. So it just pushes "everything" into the pot. No worries at all with your stove.
