I'm with Dennis on this one. I only use a bore cut for difficult fellings. I've learned a few different notch cuts, including the Humboldt, and use them as conditions require. But sometimes a bore cut is the safest solution to a problem tree.

Yes, that's a real picture from a Humboldt State game.

    Somebody had to do it.

I saw them opening for Aerosmith at Cal-Expo. There was a chain on the saw, he cut up the stool he was sitting on at the end.

I’m with Dennis too. Heavy leaner ok it’s the best way to go. Everything else is old school.
I see no pluses in using it to fell a tree in the opposite direction it naturally wants to fall. Your trigger is now where the greatest leverage for the wedge is. Your making it harder on yourself and cutting up your wedges in the process.

I use it heavily. I’m mostly thinning in pole timber, and want to minimize collateral damage, plus I love the control.

What about doing a plunge cut with a Humboldt notch, do you start the plunge to establish the hinge right behind the top cut?

I never knew it had a name. I use it mostly now on my fellings for the same reason. In most cases ill cutoff the stump after.
