Thanks brad Havent done that much splitting in a couple months so I’m feeling it tonight. Have a cherry that I’m gonna start with and then I think the next one I need to take down is an oak. We’ll have to report back tomorrow to relay the damage that was done! See ya then
We had a morning of very high winds up here on the plateau yesterday morning. Some gusts were well over 30 mph. I just knew it was going to bring some trees down, so I brought my chainsaw to work. We'll on the drive home I found a huge oak tree had come down. It was getting dark by then, but I was able to fill my D50 to capacity. I'll visit that tree again this morning and see what I can 'rescue '.
I’ve heard several members post about the “on my way home from work” scores. Great way to kill two birds with one stone and save a little gas money Getting one of the best burning firewood snakes it a win, win, win! Nice work Smaug
What an epic journey! I'm a little late to the party but . Having built mountains of wood like that I appreciate all the hard work that goes into it. Bravo . One helluva score!! Out of curiosity, I ask if you've ever stacked like this before? I've found if I stack vertically, the wood sucks up ground moisture like a straw. It accelerates rot growth. I have much better success laying rounds over on their side. When you get to splitting that far in, have a look and see if you notice similar results.
Welcome to the party! I had a huge pile like this last year as well. Not quite as big though. I split it all before it was an issue though. Planning on the same thing this year, but not a bad idea to lay first layer in side against ground just in case I didn’t get to it as soon as I thought Makes sense that they would absorb ground water if left too long this way. Motivation to get it finished
Well, I visited the downed oak that I scrounged from yesterday and got two more pickup loads before work. Here's what's left. Mostly a huge trunk some 20" in diameter, and the rounds will be too heavy for me to pick up. Still, free oak is free firewood.
Pretty good start to the day to have two kids under your belt before you even go to work! Nice job! Had the tree been down long? Chud has been doing a lot of storm scrounging and I believe he is from North Carolina too.
The tree came down yesterday morning around 10am. My aunt lives on the corner and told me about it. I knew I had to get there quickly if I wanted to get what I could. I'll stop by tomorrow just to see what gets left behind if the maintenance crews do whatever clean up they do. Hopefully they will leave some logs, but maybe not.
Out the door a little before 8 to get what I could. Didn’t get very cold overnight so I ran the load of oak I still had in my truck over to the wood yard to test things out. Ground seemed pretty firm so I unloaded quickly and hit the road to get more of what I cut yesterday. Ended up getting two additional loads out before I felt like a third would be pushing it. Ended up going to the wood yard and split for about an hour. Family stuff this afternoon and work for the next two nights. I think I’ll try and get back in the morning. Don’t know if I can get it all, but I’ll try.
And hand splitting too! You kicked azz today. Wish i had that much ambition to get three loads in one day. I dont like leaving rounds behind at a score.
It’s the anxiety! This thaw is nice and all, but it’s got me feeling in a rush Gotta remember more often than not, I’m hunting turkeys in the snow, so hopefully still got some time.
Planning to Cut for another couple weeks then it’s all splitting. Would like to be done by the end of may I’m no T.Jeff Veal with the fans and all, but I’ll do what I gotta do!
