I saw a guy do it roadside a couple years ago. I was cutting the smaller stuff and he grabbed the huge oak and did it that way. Wish i could take credit for it. Saves some time. I dont do it that often.
Too bad your under a deadline at that score. Although they can be great motivators. It always nice to split on sight, load and go straight to the stack. You dont have to tell me about handling rounds/splits multiple times!
Headed out early to get the rest of the wood I prepared yesterday. Left as the sun was rising so I could get it done while sacrificing as little as possible of the day. Was loaded up and ready in just over half an hour. Went to leave, and the truck wouldn’t turn over! I always listen to the truck radio while loading, never imagining that it would kill the battery. Assuming it must be the wind and cold, but I’m gonna keep my eye on it taking the rest of the day off for family stuff and of course tomorrow too, but may get out there saturday to try and counter Christmas dinner hope you all have a merry Christmas! Here’s some updated pics of the hoard for your viewing pleasure! I’m gonna have a lot of splitting in my future!
Ive killed my battery with the radio on. Hope thats all it was. Not in recent years though. Making great progress ! GTG at haftacuts real soon. Bring your splitter and axe!
That is truly amazing. Is there still more to get? Will you have any help splitting? Are you going to try and stack it too, or just pile it until spring? Snow will certainly complicate things.
Brother, I wish we were there to help you, dump trailer and Kubota to load it, we could haul a lot of logs back to your place, not to mention playing with more saws EDIT...after looking at all your pictures, I would probably just be in the way... A most EXCELLENT JOB, sir...
Started out with a variety of different species between taking a few down behind the neighbors, cleaning up a large limb for a friend, as well as cleaning up some cherry and oak behind my dads. Nothing more beautiful To be seen than what we see in creation!
You’re too kind Jeff! I would love the company and tips. I’ve gotten a lot from guys like yourself on the forum that have helped me with my process. Hopefully have some pics soon of massive piles of split firewood!
Finished cutting up a big oak trunk and the rest of the stuff I had down yesterday. Once I had a full load, I fell the last of the big white oaks I’m gonna take from the fencerow. Headed back this afternoon to start on its top. Fell on its own stump, so I’m gonna be very careful as I “disassemble“ it! Almost got all the brush out. Going back tomorrow afternoon to finish the brush work and get a load.
I’m working on the last sizeable tree. There’s a half dozen decent <12” trees left and a bunch of 4-6” stuff. I may have 5 or 6 more loads left out there. I’ll start splitting once I’m done with the entire fence row or the contractor comes to clear the rest. I’m going back and forth on whether I’ll stack it or pile it. I’d rather stack it, but don’t know if I want to take the time. We’ll see!
That's a nice one. Did it fall the direction you wanted? Take your time, you should be ok. That's one I would definitely like to get the Kubota onand help ya. Looks to these GA bones...
Didn’t fall how I wanted it to, but I was prepared for it to go the way it did. Gonna just take it slow. We’ve had a nice cold snap for a week or so. Nice when the ground is frozen and I enjoy cutting in the colder weather!
Got all of the limb wood out from the big white oak this morning. Going back for a load of trunk wood tomorrow. Won’t get it all, but hope to get most of it. Once I cut enough of the limb resting on the ground, the tree was able to shift and turn making it much safer to cut on. Worked out well!
