I'm missing some of my base pictures... And in this pic you will notice I missed a sticker! Just went out and slid on in there.
Perfect, thanks for the tip Mike. I lightly touched up that chain, it only needed about 2 light strokes each cutter. Made real quick work of that "tooth pick", lol.
No idea yet. I think I'll end up doing it to a few more though. Maybe just the biggest trees I can find.
I was showing my son the bacon pictures and he asked if you were going to burn it. Then I noticed it drying. Very pretty. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do with it.
I posted some of those pics on Fb and my friend who's family owns the orchards contacted me right away. He was blown away. Thought it was very cool seeing the trees like that. Asked if I would sell or give him a few slices. Well yeah! So we met up today so he could be there when they were cut. I milled more but didn't get them outta my truck yet for pics. Here's what I gave him. And a few more from the day. Same tree. Thanks Mike for the tip. These are a different tree which yielded better base pieces than the last one. More pics when I sticker it.
Holy cow. Reminiscing about my beginning's w/ apple wood. Man was that a lot of work for a little wood. I do not miss it. But I do miss burning the wood. Apple was a great heat producer and smelled up the whole house when we loaded up the basement, then the smoke smelled great too. This is why I love processing monsters. No limbing and cords per tree.
I have the Bradley as well, and although it does what it does very well, I bought an offset recently for this same reason!
Great thread and thank you for documenting your hard work and wood score! Will you be doing another apple score in the near future or is this kind of a one time opportunity?
I haven't showed any interest with the friend who's family owns the orchards. I've had a few heads up from my BIL on a couple plots that were pushed over but for the last 3-4 years I've been hoarding chestnut oak. Much easier job.
I still have the Bradley but I dont use it much since I bought a Kamado Joe ceramic 2 or 3 years ago. The offsets intrigue me but not much wild hardwood out here for me to use. I guess we have Alder. Ive had a modest but steady supply of apple in recent years from different sources that I use for smoking. Im up to several wheel barrows full now lol. I guess I have a bit more than that that is drying. Definitely more than enough for smoking wood chunks in the kamado. I have permission when the time is right to take down 6 old unpruned remaining apple trees from a long forgotten apple orchard that is slated for a subdivision. They dont want the trees so I get them. Im hoping this summer will be my time.
