Wish I could have a FHC gtg up there! Like I mentioned 1200+ trees down and I've only got about 26-27 of them so far.
Yes that would be nice. Hats off to the land owners for recognizing the great resource they have and for allowing those trees to be 'fruitful' even after death.
Unloaded the last load @ 5:37 this eve. Got a little dark on us. Pile's growing though. Back @ it in the am.
Lol! Pile's growin!! Took the 394 this time. Sure does make quick work of noodling. And I need to get some more pallets. Really wasn't prepared for all this wood
FWIW, my favorite shtick with noodling is to just cut PARTWAY through, then whack the round with a maul. Saves time, work for the saw, usable wood turned into "excelsior", cleanup. M'self, I'd try to not waste a cubic inch of apple wood, but then you've a boatload. Serious suckage!
I'm maybe 45 minutes north of you, but am stocked pretty well, but that is an incredible snag. Applewood incredible to almost anything with, cook, heat, etc.... Congrats on the great find, and glad to see that old orchard come full circle. I've eaten a lot of apples out of Adams County PA!
Noodling 24" @ a time and cutting 16-18" lengths. I really have to pull ridiculous hard to stop the chain with the small [for that saw] bar. It rips arse right through. These base pieces are pretty darn heavy. I've had 2 pee on me after the cut. One tricked steady for a good 30 seconds or so. 1st time I've ever had that happen!
True that. I should make a time lapse video. It's a lot of work to limb these out for not a lot of wood. I can get about 7 trees per truck/trailer load. Made a deal with my 15 yr old son. He desperately wants a job and can't find anything @ his age right now, so next season we'll sell this wood and he gets 50%.
Lol. I'm diggin' up an oldie here Mike to show you how long we've been tangling with the local orchards. Andy is taller than me now, as you know. So here's a blast from the past: 2009
Yup, you are so right.. my 10 yo girl was bringing in wood with me and she's like daddy it's going so fast.. it's a lot of work to move all this wood! Her cousins down street have heat set to 64 all winter.. she's like their house is freezing!, well honey that's the Temp our house would be without woodstove.. her face did this.. She went got me a cup of coffee ,... So I could go some more wood I love my Lil girl
Well guys I couldn't resist. A friend has a csm so I borrowed it and had to go up and mill a biggun'. So I limbed it and broke out the 394. I knew it was too big to manage so I decided to do it in 2 pieces. This was the first time I milled by myself. I didn't have an aluminum ladder for the first cut so I had to improvise. I free handed the small longer log. Probably won't do that again. And as I was driving to the orchard, I realized I forgot my wedges! So I cut some. The larger piece I figured I could noodle the nearest part, then continue the line from the small branch spot.
And that plan worked out great. I do need to learn proper first cut set up though. This pic is of the second noodle cut. And separation. Mount up the mill and it's go time. Yahtzee!!! It sure was creepy lookin'. I was working in the clouds! Visibility was about 30-40 yards. And near the end it was a light drizzle.
