Glad you had good success today! That dry would make me nervous too. I had home made chicken noodle soup for dinner & those grubs & my noodles weren't all that dissimilar looking, so there is that.

Nice work leoht was there much cut down for us out there mate? I’ll hopefully get out there in a couple of weeks and get a few loads
For those that don’t know we have firewood cutting areas in our region and all across the state where our state parks department go out and cut heaps of trees down for us to use for our heaters. There is a daily limit and a yearly limit and must only collect from designated areas but it is a good system. Years ago we had to pay for a permit but now it’s free.

The Forest Circus (Service ;) ) has designated areas in our National Forests where we can cut, the permit prices are reasonable, but the Rules and Prices can vary widely from one area to another, mostly based on the available wood supply, and expected demand in a given area

In the Mt Hood NF (National Forest) permits cost $10/Cord with a 2 Cord minimum purchase ( a Cord is a stack 4’x4’x8’ which is 128 cubic feet) here we have a 6 Cord per Household, not Person annual limit, and we are not allowed to fall or winch any wood

IIRC, in the Bend/Fort Rock Unit, it is $5/Cord, 8 cords annually per household, 2 cord minimum purchase, and can fall up to 20” DBH, No Winching

In the Wenatchee and Tonasket NF’s I believe it is $5/Cord, 2 cord minimum, 12 Cord/household annually and allowed to fall up to 24” DBH, I don’t recall if Winching wood is allowed in the Wenatchee NF, but I believe winching up to 200’ is allowed in the Tonasket NF.

Some State Forests have Firewood cutting areas, but I haven’t cut in them, and I am not familiar with the Prices and rules in them, but I believe that they are fairly similar to the Forest Circus rules and prices

In the NF’s we are required to have a Forest Circus wood cutting Map, and weekly wood cutting info sheet in our possession, along with a Fire Extinguisher and an 8” shovel, and are required to stay for an hour after the last saw is shut down, for a “Fire Watch “, which if I cut as much as I can haul, by the time I finish loading the trailer and pack up the gear the one hour Fire Watch requirement is usually met. I usually have 2-4 Five Gallon buckets of water on hand and my Brother in Law is a Fireman/Paramedic and he built a very complete First Aid Kit for my Birthday, that is another item we never forget to take along

    Doug

There is a bit cut for us but mostly the smaller stuff that you like. I had to hunt a bit for some larger trees. I don’t know how much will me left in a couple of weeks in Italian gully, Snake valley was cleaned out already. I went over to Enfield today and got a load, I could see where a lot has already been taken but there is still some good wood left.

I headed out the bush before dawn again yesterday, it was a nice morning 65F before the sun came up however it was humid and I was sweating soon after getting to work.

There was not much room on the road so I parked where I could out of the way and cut then staged the rounds next to the road so I could quickly load them and hopefully avoid having any problems with traffic. Unfortunately another ute and trailer did come along as I was almost finished loading, luckily it was a Toyota HiLux and narrow enough to fit past my trailer.

    Solid load.

I always enjoy the drive home after loading up my trailer.

I got home at 11:20am just before the rain started, it rained all afternoon so I left the unloading and splitting until today.

I still have some stacking to do but it’s all split.
