The "common cold" is usually a rhinovirus or coronavirus. Tends to spread in Winter when people are cooped up together in heated envelopes with nasal passages that have adapted to cold dry weather. Some of these same shared winter facilities exacerbate the spread of norovirus. I have a travel friend who got polio when he was in grammar school . Has been in a wheel chair ever since. Quite successful lawyer and to this day still does pretty good getting himself around. Get out of his way because he'll give ya a good shove. LOL.
Being a bit younger than Dennis, I remember our local doctor being very forward thinking and really promoted the polio vaccine when it was developed and made available. One community in the area didn't promote it and there were some tragic deaths and disabled people left after it swept through the community.
Dennis, We had both shots (injection) and sugar cubes back then. One of my best friends did not and was crippled by the disease. I also know a maintenance worker in Kentucky that wears a brace today as a result of that menace. No need to talk about this vaccine or any other in my opinion. Rather I was brought up as a proud American where you have the freedom to live your life as you wish. Our constitution gives us that freedom. God bless the United States of America.

When I was in grade school, we used to go out and collect money for them. I believe we had folders we would hand out and there were places in it to put dimes. When it was full, it was returned to the school to be sent in.
