I normally don't mind snow and winter but this is getting old!! Snowbanks in my yard are pretty darn high from the snowblower. Probably get another foot plus today and they are talking about another system on Wed. Spent the better part of the last week in bobcat moving and pushing snow back for plow guys. Probably be back at it again this week. Reports are saying that the best skiing in the country right now is in the north east, they never say that. We might be in the top 2-3 in the record books in snowfall totals after this one.
21% now on Buzzards Bay Thunder/Snow and can't see 200' in the back yard. Getting way over 3" an hour right now! Good thing I brought in a weeks worth of wood yesterday as my stacks are now under 16" of snow.
Glad we didn't get any snow here with the way the wind is whipping around. The weather channel was talking about a ground blizzard in New England today..
It's about 10° right now but very windy so I'm sure we're in the negative with the wind chill. Well, going to get the snow blower running and clean everything up. I think I've put more gas in my snow blower than my truck this month!
I've always loved snow. Though we live in southern RI by the ocean. More often than not we get a mix or just rain. It's due to the temps off the ocean. This year has been a very slow start. Usually we'll get a storm before Xmas. This year we only had a dusting in my area. Then January hit and the skies opened up with white fluffy stuff. We are no where near what northern RI, Ma or Maine is with snow. Personally I wish we were in Maine. Though I might have a different opinion. Mass and Maine have been really battered hard this year. Still none of it comes close to the Blizzard of 78 for us. Temps have been unusually low. Normally we might get a few days here or there down to 10. This year we've seen a bunch of days at or below zero. Not complaining. Winter is what winter is. I can remember the winters in the early 90's where we barely saw any snow and temps were above average. It was not until 94 that we have a good winter.
Heads up for some of us...A friends waterline to the house from his well froze up, they got it broke loose but the guy that fixed it told him to keep a water faucet running continually because the frost is so deep in the ground now...He built his house about 14 years ago and first time that's happened to him...Yes he does plow over the part that caught and I am assuming that his waterline is down at least 4 feet....
The deeper snow does a nice job of moderating the amount of heat needed in the house. With the bitter temps and wind chills we are having, a few weeks ago heating would have been brutal. Now that we finally have some snow on the ground, the house is protected quite a bit and I only only find it necessary to run with a moderate fire. -40 wind chill and comfortable inside is delightful.
We got about 3-4" last night. I went in to work to "try" to plow. We got the lots and driveways cleared but the drifting was horrible. Dang wind almost blew me right off the hopper of the salt truck
It's funny reading this because I used to tell folks that same thing and most times I'd get a blank look. lol Also, in the farm country in northern MI where it is more open, most farmers would push snow up against the house to keep the wind from getting to it so much. It definitely helped but in spring it is best to move it away.
Does a "blizzard" suck or blow? These are from wind driven snow, not sure if it was sucked into the screened in porch (gas grill pic) or if it was blown in. The truck pics are in a shed 28' deep (away from the open sky) and I still needed to scrape the windows.
The snow is getting deep here as well. We have not had any blizzards. But keep getting small amounts of snow that keep adding up. Will winter stay cold right through March like it did last year? That is what I am wondering. I am hoping not, but it feels like winter is one month behind again. Mild fall/early winter, then it hit after the holidays and now it feels like January temperatures in February. Just like last year. Let's hope March isn't cold.
That map is just the current snow depth. They've gotten a lot more than that, but it packs big time. I remember one year we got a bit over 200 inches and the deepest it got was around 50". One year we also went to Copper Harbor around March 1 and there was about 6' on the level. Total snowfall at that time was just under 300" for the season.
gboutdoors , Do you use heat lamps? Or..... How do you keep the chickens warm enough? Are they in the coop on the right or the building on the left? Very cool picture. Nice place you have there.
No heat at all the chickens do well down to -10 real temp. I do have a heater for the water in the coop that keeps it from freezing but that's it. They are in the coop on the right I had not dug them out yet when the picture was taken. The barn on the left is were the tractor and all it's toys stay.
Hey gboutdoors do you run a block heater on your 'bota? I installed one late fall in mine after a rough winter last year. She sits outside and starts right up now every time. I need one of those remote actuated deals now so I don't have to trudge to the lean-to and then wait an hour for the warm up.
No block heater here but it was a little cranky yesterday morning with the -2 but hold the glow plugs on for 30-60 seconds and she jumped to life.
