Dad is looking for a 9mm handgun. ... I get to help him pick it out. Its kinda of what He wants... vs. what I want him to get... He's a relatively "cheap" gun ($$$) for plinking and for self defense. During Christmas I took several of mine down to him so I could let him look and feel them. I'm thinking in the lines of SW or a Ruger or heck I wouldn't be a posed to Glock. I'm thinking double stack series and a fairly compact series... Definitely no a full size... ... But he saw on a TV commercial the other day of a Springfield Armory Hellcat. Looked it up looked good. But how is the reputation of them? Dependable?
I'm a Ruger guy, great firearms for moderate prices and excellent customer service. I own 4 Rugers, the latest is the Security 9 Compact. Love the gun and depending where you buy you only looking at $300 brand new.
I would go with a nice Sig compact like a P320, but those may be a bit pricey compared to a Glock. Well, after looking at the G19 & the Hellcat, the prices aren't that much different (depends on which sale you can hit for any of them). If your father is plinking, I would think the Hellcat, as a sub compact would be harder to control with a 3" barrel (compared to 4" for the Glock & Sig compacts)
Glock 42 or 43 might fit the bill. I'm not buying anything from Springfield until they clean their act up. Plus, their customer service isnt what I expect from a company with their prices. I'm a Sig fan, but Smith, Ruger, and others are making fine pistols at good price points. Especially Ruger.
I like my sig 938 for CC purposes, but really enjoy my CZ P07 double stack with it’s 15+1 capacity. On the other end is my s&w shield. Can’t beat it for what they cost now. $250 or so for a highly dependable handgun imho. Shield is fairly comfortable to shoot. Yesterday my 14 yo daughter took her first shots with it. Ruger makes great affordable pistols. Look at the s&w sv9e. The trigger is a little stiff, and apparently an easy fix, but a cheap reliable double stack 9mm. I like mine, but at some point I'll probably do the trigger mod.
I have a Springfield xd9 , it’s been super reliable, good fit, accurate, easy to use. I just don’t like it. I know this isn’t helpful just my two cents. I should have bought it in a 45 or 40 since I was planning on using it a lot and wanted to save on ammo cost, and haven’t used it much because I don’t like it. It’s also made in Croatia, not that there’s anything wrong with that. They just did a very good job of misleading advertising when I bought mine 13 years ago.
I have the S&W Shield in .40 cal...added the laser. I really like it. Has some punch, not bulky, single stack
If I'm buying a sidearm for protection, cost is not the first factor. Get something thats comfortable to shoot (and conceal, if thats the intended use) A manual safety and single stack for concealed carry. 7-10 rds should be plenty for social work.

My ex had one and although I could shoot it very well, I didn't like it either. It just wasn't a nice fit for my hand like my Sig.
When I bought the laser, it came with holster for it It hides easy The Performance Center model is ported, has better trigger and glow sights on it.
Springfield's reputation is good or horrible depending on where you ask. You can't go wrong with S&W, Glock, or Ruger in a pistol now. I own all 3 and also carry a S&W for work. There are some good deals out there on police trade-in Glocks and S&W's out there. Most are midsize or bigger but G26/27's show up too. My personal M&P was a police trade-in and is in great shape.
I guess we could argue about the "needed" capacity or "appropriate" caliber. Or the average shots on target during an intense gun battle... but...i didn't think that was the sentiment in the OP. the mentioned choice was a micro 9 with 11+1 capacity, double stack. I get the impression that Pappymn99 isnt going to be running into any firefights.
Absolutely. I was thinking about my own wants. If the odds are stacked against you, double stack will help.
