Decent day here. Overcast, but nothing falling from the clouds. I moved some rack coverings around. I try to have the best coverings on the racks that'll be used up next year. I split some rounds from a dead ash tree. A couple days worth I then moved a short rack of some ugly red oak. It was laying covered with wet leaves for a few years, before finding its way to me. From here To here That's the sunniest spot in the yard. The oak is still solid, but a few pieces had fungi. The far left of the above rack, is next to be moved to the deck rack. Mostly red oak, but with a couple pieces of black locust. Once I move that wood to the deck, I'll move another short rack of more ugly red oak. It felt good to be out splitting and dealing with stuff outdoors. Haven't done much of that for several weeks. I think I have the most ugly racks around. But, they are what they are. Time for a shower and the Bruins game at noon.
PITA to play "musical stacks" as i call it, but part of keeping it sorted. How long you think before SS begins up there Mike? Headed out to do some splitting myself.
Shoulder season showed up early last year, but went on for far too long. My shoulder wood is pretty much anything but red oak. What I do have for shoulder wood(red maple, elm, ash, apple) needs several more months before ready. So, I'll probably keep burning RO.
Hoping shoulder season is around the corner. Treating today as such. I moved the rest of my shoulder season wood into the shed and garage today. Tarp on it while in a stack has been useless for a month. Hoping the roof will let the surface moisture leave.
It can breath in your shed. Cold temps Tuesday, then warming again. Nice to see you back in the eastern time zone.
Good to be outdoors rearranging your woodpile during the not so dead of winter but not quite muddy spring time. I'll be doing the same this week. All the wood I'll need to burn this year is already moved in from the backyard, which means there's space to fill and piles to attend to out back.
I was ok with needing to move that wood. It doesn't happen often. I knew when I was stacking it last year that it would be moved again. I didn't have another place to stack it, at that time.
Did some of the same yesterday. Just cold enough to not be muddy. Move some SS wood closer to the house, ready to throw in the FP. I thought of buZZsaw BRAD as I had to noodle some. I forgot about how many shorts and uglies I had in the stacks! Will have to have any ugly day soon.
The Sub-Zero wind chills have abated. So, it was back to dealing with more ugly red oak. First was to bring to the deck, the last of the remaining wood. Then, loads of the oak. I had the split ash available, to it went on the same rack. My hope is the oak will be ready for 21-22. Come September, I'll resplit a piece and see what the moisture meter reads
Thats not nice you calling to wood ugly Mike! What if you hurt its feelings??? Some nice btu's! I have a bunch of oak i'll have to play "musical stacks" with.
It knows it's ugly. That's a 10 foot rack, with another 2 behind it. Future resting place for a hickory and a maple I'm going to fell, in a week or so.
The ash will be a nice treat once you get to burning that oak. I've got moving to do, too. Oak that's up against the fence, and behind two racks of other wood. Doh!
With low wind chills again forcasted for Friday, spent time splitting the rest of a white oak I dropped, a couple months ago. Then, stacked all of it to sleep for 2-3 years. It was standing dead for a few years. Ignore the tube rack. It's a work in progress. The white oak is behind it. I have an amount of other standing dead oak, that'll be cut and split, and will top off the white oak. Feels good to be back outside wooding.
Doesnt get much better my friend does it. Of course im a bit than you and wanting the cold. Looking good! Did you put a MM to it? How long ago did you cut it?
Oh. I like the cold. But when gusty winds 30mph+ are involved. I'm happy to avoid it. Talk to me in 9yrs. Our age diff. Looks like the dead WO came down late January. I'm dreaming of a white... I haven't put my MM to it. The bark just falls off of it. No sign of sapwood rot.
I really like your wood cart Mike. It looks like it would push easily with those large diameter wheels. How do you like it for moving wood? Do you have have to be concerned with weight limits? Thanks.
