Yeah, even the straight BE is twisted. That's why I like using the old Didier splitter, it's more like a shear. It just splits the wood where the wedge is, not where the grain is. I'll see how the mtd h/v splitter works on this stuff once I get it running again. The fuel tank just empties out, so I think the needle jet/ float needs attention. Oh yeah the recoil rope popped off the handle and retracted all the way in the recoil housing. It's not easy to sneak it out. I'll need to keep putzing on it.
Not a huge fan of box elder, we call it manitoba maple ( seems fitting being in manitoba) Aside from a few ash trees thats all i have on my 4 acres, grows fast, if one falls I'll make it into firewood but won't drive far for it My dad and I were splitting some this summer and he looks at me and says "good thing you have a boiler" as they don't really split, just shear
I burned Norway a lot when I was younger. I used to listen for saws and follow the city trucks around my hometown scrounging. Norway is very plentiful in more urban areas since it was planted almost excessively along street tree belts and in front yards years back. It was very popular because it was so hardy, grew fast and had a nice crown. However, it's fallen out of favor as it's now considered an invasive species. I believe it's now banned from new planting in both MA and NH.
Thats how i used to scrounge a lot of it years back prior to bucking when id grab what lengths i could. Now ill buck on site to load.
I had a Norway Maple a few years ago and burned part of it last year.... I'd go after it again if I could. However, it can be gnarly, but heat is heat.
