Bout the only thing IMO that would kill the saw is when the muffler bolts come loose and the hot exhaust melts the case. Aside from that, anything can be fixed. One of the first things I do with these is remove those 4 underside riser base screws one at a time and loctite them. Second is metal intake boot clamp and third is a modified 346 muffler bracket.
Its in good hands. The chain saw whisperer. Mike's know how is amazing. He has worked on my 020, 026 Stihls, my 335 Husky, my friends 262 Husky as well.
tank is starting to melt but not through on the sides. Hopefully we can stop that. Ever use AM cylinder on these. I never have great luck with AM cylinders. Often need to wallow out bolt holes to everything centered.
a lot of transfer from the piston. I was hoping that long stretch in the upper left was a heavy deposit. Unfortunately not. This one has some gouges.
I’d much rather get used OEM. AM is just not worth it. I’ve seen so many guys post vids showing the lack of quality, plating peeling/flaking, poor casting etc. I’ve worked over quite a few scored cylinders and it takes a deep gouge to ruin em.
My 350 was burned up pretty good by the previous owner, and the shop I got it from didn't do it any favors. Nothing was tight and there was silicone everywhere, including inside the spark plug. Not sure what cylinder they used. I ordered an aftermarket from hls and the screws were stripped, so it went back. I ported the cylinder that was on it and it didnt run right. Leak at the pto seal. Put it back together with more sealer, same thing. Leak in the same place. Tore it down, ordered a new case, leak fixed. The right side had gotten so hot when it burned up that the case was melted/deformed just enough to not seal. Now it runs great. I have ported several 350's over the years and have not had any trouble with muffler bolts. I torque them and they stay. I think the high temps of a non modded muffler contribute to bolt stretch and then they vibrate out, because all my mufflers have been modded and problem free.
Couple guys over there had issues with Loctite 518 on plastic case stuff. What kind of sealant do you use? I've been using motoseal for a long time w/ 100% success.
Going to take care of the air leaks before worrying about the carb Will need to go to the bone yard for muffler bolts. As WeldrDave posted earlier, the original cylinder was re tapped for the big bolts.
The 350 of many hands and miles, is once again back with me. I picked it up this morning from M2theB. I didn't want it to take up space unnecessarily. No new pics of it....yet. Not sure when I'll fire it up. When I do, there'll be pics. Thanks again Mike. Your efforts are appreciated, as always.
I finally got around to giving the saw a good test. I'd say it performed very well. Red oak. Other pics over at Today's victim Once again, thanks to WeldrDave for the saw and to M2theB for his time and expertise.
I'm glad to see it up and running! Nice job to all for keeping her going Mike, and M2theB for his expertise!
Pretty good test of that saw too. That's big wood for a smallish homeowner saw to be slicing up. First saw I ever bought was a Husky 450. Getting serious into hoarding, I realized it wasn't what I would need for the long term. After getting into saws more, had I got a 350 instead, my opinion wouldn't have been the same. I think the older tech is a better piece. I love these saws. Hope it continues to serve you well. I have no doubt it will with M2theB wrenching on it.
