Probably going to pick up 2 or 3 more carbides, hang on to the timberline but also invest in a good electric bench mounted deal.

I have the girder we have all been talking about for around $100. But I kept my cheapo HF grinder as well. I have not swapped the wheel back as I don't use much 3/8 lopro but the plan is to use the HF grinder for lopro chain and the large grinder for real 3/8. But I sharpen 15-20 to 1 big chains to small I bet.

    Look at the picture.
I removed 1 from its container and left the 2nd one in its container.
Also bought them from TS. After shipping they were over $46.

Pic sizes to my phone just right?

Wow that's a lot of money. And these things break!! This makes my $99 grinder look even more appealing! Sure a wheel can break but not that often and I'm thinking $20 will buy you a new one all day long anywhwre.

I've now sharped a couple of chains about 20 to 40 times each with the Timberline. I've only used two carbines, one small for lp and one large. Both of them look brand new, you would be hard pressed to tell me if they were used or not compared to the 5 or 6 extra carbines I have that I have yet to use. I got the carbines for $16.99 at Baily's on sale, and used a free shipping coupon, so the price as not bad and they will likely last the rest of my firewood "career" I'm guessing based on the last 2 seasons use.

I'm sure thare are lots of benefits to usign a grinder over a timberline, but there are also a few benefits to using the timberline over bench grinders that have not been mentioned. Those are you do not have to remove the chain from the bar to sharpen, and you can easily sharpen while in the field.

Somebody like me would likely do more damage to a chain trying to learn/setup/calibrate and use a bench grinder than something like a timberline. Carry on! ;)

I can't imagine you doing more damage with a bench grinder than that "carbine" you sharpen with! :p:rofl:  :rootintootin:

Sorry Machria but I got a pretty good chuckle out of that! :handshake:

That Granberg sharpener looks identical to a Stihl one I was given recently by s friend. I havent tried it yet.
I reecently bought a diamond sharpener to go in an electric drill. reckon it will be a heap better that the handfiling I often do mid job.
As the chain is sharpened many times it becomes impossible to keep the teeth the same size so a frind of mine (normalises) my chain with a proper grindign wheel version? Its great and I hope he leave it to me in his will.

You guys that know what your doing, as apposed to the hacks like myself are always talking about spools and reels of bulk chain... I had never thought about it before, but how do you put the chain "together"? In other words how do you fasten the two ends of a chain together to form a loop? I got a spam this morning from Baileys, with a "Chainbreaker" listed.... Is this what it is used for?

You got it. Use the breaker to cut the chain to desired length then use the spinner with a joining link to make the chain loop.

You can buy loops on sale for almost as cheap as making them yourself. I am talking about Oregon chain here. I bought a bag of chains from loggerchain
