    I have 044, 066, and 661 ........... and a few others
My 044 is my main saw and I don't think there could ever be a replacement for it. I have run it all day and into the night ........... I don't think I would like doing that with the 661, but my 661 is outfitted in .404 with a 36 for the biguuns and stumping. If I had to cut biguuns day in and day out, the 661 would be my saw, but for the power my 044 has, and the majority of cutting I do, there is no replacing my 044.

The 661 is much better on gas than the 066, but it isn't as good as the 044.

CAD is why I have a bunch of saws, and my 044 was getting everything done, but adding a 90cc saw to the stable did make life easier.

I suggest that you weasel and worm your way if you have to, but try to keep the 70cc and get the 90cc. Use them together for a little bit, then if you MUST decide, its your decision which one to move down the road.

A ported 70cc is ideal for a 28" bar in my opinion. The 90cc and up saws are fun to have, but I've sold every one I've owned in favor of the power to weight of a ported 70cc.

I don't know if the mtronic will keep it tuned rich enough for 8-10 minute cuts like milling. I like to tune them down 500-1k rpm from normal for milling to keep extra fuel I there to cool it.

If at all possible this is what I'd try to do.

I would run both saws for awhile also.

Your getting it done now. Keep chain sharp . You will cost your self a lot more money with the 661. If you want both look for a used 660 and save a few bucks bit I dont think you will be that much faster. But if your cutting 36" wood then a larger saw will help

Agree, BUT I gotta say in my limited experience if the OE 372xp was the queen of all saws that 661c is looking to be the king.:saw:

I've got an MS461 ported by MMWS and I've run 32" B&C in white oak even before it was ported. Porting your 372 would be about 25% of the cost of a new 661 and give you a big boost in power for heavy duty work. Then save up and add a 661c/390XP/395XP in the near future. If you ever want to run my 461 just let me know and I'll swing by your place with it and several bars and chains. I'm only 15 min. away.

I appreciate that. I'm not really interested in making my saw any louder, how much can port work do before making it obscenely loud?

Grr. I had let go the notion of a larger saw but I just found a 390xp locally for a good price. It's going to be hard to resist checking it out.

It depends on the muffler opening. A 372 is pretty loud when ported. The 550 and 562 are louder to me than a 372.

My understanding is that additional performance comes from both internal and muffler work - so leaving the muffler stock or nearly stock + full internal work might get performance without as much ear bleeding noise.

But you'd be leaving a lot of performance and cooling on the table..

With ear muffs there is not that much difference. I wear muffs or plugs to protect my hearing no matter what

:BrianK: I hate to be the one who had to say this, but... anyone running a saw should be wearing hearing protection.

There are ways to mod the muffler without making them stupid loud. It will get louder, but avoiding straight thru flow will help keep noise down as will conservative modification of any internal baffles. I have two ported Stihls that while they are noticeably louder than stock, they are not nearly as loud as some of the vintage saws I have.

I agree that's beyond obvious, as I forgot to mention that myself. I always wear either muffed helmet and faceguard or a set of good Peltors. And chaps, gloves, and boots.

I can't make the horses or the neighbors wear them though. If I did my cutting way out in the woods I wouldn't have that preference.
