So 3/8" pitch is a better choice, overall , for wood cutting if speed & efficiency are a concern ?

You know another test you could do to erase some myths ?
    How about 3/8" RS vs 3/8" RS3

Some think the RS3 safety chain is slower,
    not sure that's true ? ?

my guess is only slower when you plunge cut with the nose of the bar,
not with cut off cuts like in your video.

RS3 might be a tad heavier, but negligible performance difference for cutting off rounds.

I mean your low profile chain cut faster , it was with PS3
doesn't that have the safety hump ? Green safety chain ?

Here's where the variables come in...
Remember MM saying the large 3/8 almost was more than the saw could handle? It's because that model is right on the threshold of having enough power to own a 3/8 chain.. Any less, and the 3/8 loads the saw down to much to realize the gains in cutter design. Raise the horsepower 25%, and see the cut times rival or beat the 3/8 LP.
.325 is used to keep stock saws with decent HP in the happy RPM range and provide smooth limbing with the cutters being so close together..

    I think I get it :
.325 kinda like, on a 10" table saw blade,
more teeth, smoother cut, just not a fast cut .
    The liming thing makes sense.
    Thanks

    Now you're on to something.....

That's right folks, you just watched a green label safety chain spank two different types of yellow label chain.

And you are correct Dave, RS3 is going to be so close to RS in terms of cut speed that I doubt you would know the difference without cameras and computers. That is until the nose of the bar gets buried. ;)

I could make a career out of doing chain vids. There are so many myths to bust and theories to prove.

I would love to do similar runs with a couple different powerheads. A hot 40cc like the MS241C-M and a 60cc like the 562XP or the 362C-M. I think we would see how displacement and power change things.

The house is available (foreclosure), has a decent detached garage and I would welcome you as my neighbor Pete.

    Great Job!

I like to use the time counter at the bottom of the video screen to time the cuts. This way if there is a lag in the video I don't get a longer time than I should.

The rims and bars should mount right up to the 362? I would send you a mean 60 cc saw if you really wanted it? Pay return shipping or bring it to the GTG. I may get a day off this weekend, but could send it next week?

For the sake of science and all ;)

OK Mech… here's a good comparison for ya. Using the same chains, but, on top of the log, spike down a few 1" steaks (no bones ;))… and gently lay all those chains down on em. Then, you can report back which chains are "saaaaaaaaafer". ;) And, who knows? The safety chains might not do as much damage to meat/legs as the others. Master Mech Myth Buster… let the blood fly… :D At the very least, you'd have a h*ll of a video showing why chaps are a good idea.

You need to get to the Iowa GTG on the 26th...
They are real eye openers as to how stuff works and why...
Not to mention the best bunch of folks you could ever hope to hang with for a day...

Might I add, the new PS chains can be square filed too...

The bar will mount but the rims will not. :( Would need to find standard spline Picco/low pro rims. Or a spur sprocket. Ick.

Really nice comparison there MM. I've been very happy with running 3/8 .05 Picco on my 191T, it has the power to handle it. And yes, I'm running a spur sprocket.

I finally wore out the .325 bar on my 024 this winter and was debating which way to go for a replacement. It can't handle the 18" 3/8 I run on my 026, so I figured a 16" 3/8 at best, a 16 or 18" .325, or a 16 or 18" 3/8 P. I like the 18" best for reach, although I only cut stuff half that length at best with that saw. I've seen the bars for sale but knew I'd have to find that Picco sprocket/rim. So I gather that my 024 has the same mini-spline clutch drum, I'm running a rim on it now. A 3/8P mini in 7 pin would probably be the way to go on the 024.

I agree Boog. This 3/8P bar and rim setup was actually intended for the 024 back in the day if my information is correct.

Do they fit on a grinder to speed that process up? Rough them in on a grinder and then finish with a file?

Hey, why mess with tradition, this was an easy decision, go Picco. Now if I can only find another hoard of that old PM chain still available! I've got some loops in 55 link for the 16" 191T bar, I think that was short of your 16" bar's profile though, I'll have to go back and check.

    (Yup, 60 link for 16")
