Yep. I think they kept a fairly similar design and just swapped barrels around. They used to call this the Scout V2 now it’s the Scout TD. Maybe a little change to separate the types of rifles? Yep it’s pretty nice. Seems well made, it’s no high dollar fine fit and finish, but at$450 it seems good. I saw they offered the 35 whelen, but I doubt I’d be able to find even one box of that around here.
Oh snap, I think that's the one a guy can do a breech plug and turn it into a .45 cal smokeless muzzleloader....
I have the same exact gun. I tried 4 different factory rounds and blue box Federal in 300 grain were the most accurate off sand bags. I was disappointed the LeveRevolutions had the largest group. They were pricey,,,,
I’ve heard that about the hornady loads. I almost think they are too hot and get things tumbling or sling the bullets off course. I tried hornady slugs in my 20ga once and wasn’t a big fan either. I’m guessing they are close to the same bullet.
Being an original black powder cartridge, you need very bulky smokeless powder to fill the case. With most cartridges a small amount of high speed power seldom gets you any accuracy. Has to do with orientation of the powder vs the primer flash. Course all the other goodies come into play as well, bore dia, throat specs and whether your into or off the lands and such.
I have a Henry lever in 45-70. I love it. The leverevolution ammo is great and seems to shoot flat. It is just expensive. Other ammo shoots just fine. I have some 405 high power jhp rounds that will put a bruise on your shoulder. I actually went out and bought a shoulder pad. The regular ammo kicks like a 12ga. It really feels like you are shooting a roll of dimes and great for moose and elk. It is a lot of power for dear and some people complain about destroying the meet. For deer, a regular off-the-shelf round would probably be the best choice. Maybe sellier & bellot? I have steniel jhp 405 high power, defender 300 gr. And a boat load of the cowboy action loads. Cowboy action loads are fine but very smokey.
Put a few rounds out of the gun today. Grouped good at 50 yards shooting off hand. Super light crisp trigger with zero creep! The recoil is less than my 20ga with a trap load in it. I’m happy! Can’t wait to take a deer this fall!!
First off, there are no "cons" with the 45-70 in my opinion! lol. It just don't get no cooler than a 149 year old black powder cartridge, that still works just fine and dandy, there's a lot of history behind it for sure! I have the same CVA rifle, it's a very good value, the best factory trigger I've seen so far! Muzzle brake does help some, but not all that much, my H&R 32" "Buffalo rifle" kicks much worse, but I don't mind recoil on the 45/70, it just seems like it's the way it should be. We use the 350 grain Barry's plated bullets, shoot them at 2300fps with no copper fouling to speak of. Hodgden H-4198 gives the best velocity, (but I'm not telling you how much to use). RL-7 is about the next best fuel for 45/70 followed by imr 4227, accurate 1680, and imr 3031. Enjoy! P.S. if'n you can't find brass I might be able to spare a few new starline cases.
Hey thanks for the info! Totally new to this cartridge and so far I really like it. I’m a history lover and anything old is cool, including old calibers.
Excuse my ignorance, but does the 45-70 fall into the straight wall case category required for some regions for rifle hunting deer? I don't know much about the straight wall case requirement as it's not needed here in Canada but I hear lots of talk over the relatively newer developed rounds like the 350 Legend and 450 Bushmaster but very little mention of some of the classics like the 45-70, .444 Marlin and the 375 Winchester.
For a number of years we were limited to pistol cartridges only ( max case length 45 long colt or 44 mag with a minimum power factor ie. 357 mag up)during deer hunting in shotgun only areas. rifle counties it didn't matter. few years back they did away with shotgun areas ( unless the locals did something) So any of the boomer pistols are legal now. Again minimum power is listed in ft pounds of energy which is about the 357 mag with a 158 gr on the low side, might be a barrel length restriction also like 6" minimum , but i haven't looked at the rules recently. Il and OH have the straight wall case rule with a max case length iirc. Hornady came out with a 356 case at a 1/10" longer that the 357max just for those states. ( not really new as the first iteration of the max was the same length, but when Big Green legitimized it they shrank it 1/10", likely a patent thing) By the way 357 pills work just fine in the new Hornady case/ units designed for it.
I wouldn't really call it selling but I would be happy to send you what I have. Maybe 6 or 8 boxes? I can't remember how much I keept but i can take a look. Maybe throw me a few bucks for shipping? Shoot me a pm if you like. It if anyone else wants some brass. I don't intend to reload right now.
