Changed the cat muffler on my 359 after the warranty ran out. http://www.baileysonline.com/Chains...st/Husqvarna/Muffler-Assm-357-359-Non-Epa.axd Is that a good thing? I'd asked around & even the dealer said he'd change it after warranty was gone. I think it runs better, & cooler. What the " Chain saw gurus " say ? Smokinpiney has the same saw, he's wondering too.
NO -- you are now responsible for melting 3 glaciers; global sea levels will rise 4.5 feet... do you have any idea how many midgets are going to drown??? Put that CAT back on now, it may not be too late to make a difference. (here's what I did to mine) Never ran the saw with it stock though so IDK how much of a difference it made.
Ditch the cat. It will run better and sound better. I ditched the cat mufflers in both my quakes and wow what a difference in sound and performance. I bought chinese replacements and the muffler modded them to free flow. Check ebay you might save a good bit over baileys.
I didn't mod it. Just replaced. How important is that little exhaust screen ? I check it, wipe it off now & then.
If your in the republic of california or other western states like idaho or utah or somewhere its the law. Me personally I pull them out when in there as it is resistance. It does help junk from getting sucked in, crawling in , or falling into the saw when its either running or bouncing g around in your truck. But it won't cause damage pulling it out. May need to rich en the carb as it will flow more but most likely you won't notice it on carb adjustment.
If you have yet to mod a muff on that 359 Dave? Then I would highly recommend it. That is a beast of a saw when they are opened up. Make the port about 2-3 times the original port. Then adjust the H screw till it Burbles or four strokes.
I had to re-tune my 359 when I put the non cat muffler on it. It really made a difference! I also had a Walbro 199A reworked and put that on there and now she's a real screamer! Puts a smile on my face every time I run it - which is every day! Ted
Yea, It's real close the old 357xp. Different piston I think. I read abut you guys porting mufflers all the time. Want skin a Grizzly bear or fillet a salmon, I'm the guy. Shade tree mechanic here , spark plugs, oil & filters type. Not sure what the port is exactly. What is the port you are porting? The hole out of the muffler or the hole into the muffler or the pipe from the internal muffler body to the exit hole out of the muffler If it's just a mater of drilling a hole, I can handle that. Pics of the cat Muffler
If I pull the screen on the one on the saw Do I break screen off the metal tab & put the screw & tab back on?
Making the outlet hole larger. Where the games come out. This helps the saw breathe easier and make more power. But the saw will need tuned afterwards. If you're willing? We are willing to walk you through it?
Remove screw and pull the entire screen out.. You cut on State land? I would check to make sure it's something you don't NEED to be legal.
Pretty straight forward cutting rules. Nothing about the saw. Screen off, putting the tab & screw back in. Not sure hot gases are to go that direction under the plastic cover Will wait till tomorrow to run & adj. Dark, & 15° with 45 mph winds.
The port in the muffler is where the exhausted exits the saw into the world. Some call that porting a muffler as there making the exhaust port larger. Porting a saw will increase the exhaust port diameter to allow the saw to ex spell gasses into the muffler easier. This will go along with an increase of the intake as well. Once you do this you also "port match the muffler intake hole and gasket to the newly widened exhaust port on the saw. Confused you yet. Its all just term I ology and who uses what how. We will call what you will be doing a muffler mod. And yes you possibly could do some good with a drill. But most likely will also need a dremel tool. You can probably drill out the internal baffled from the back of the muffler to allow the exhaust to flow through the baffel easier. Then you need to increase the hole on the outside of themuffler 2-3x its current size. This is where the dremel and carbide cutting bits or just a simple stine will help. Just start grinding away under the deflector. Prying it up with a screwdriver before you start to gain clearance for your tools. I have not had a 359 muffler in my hand so the process may vary a bit. These are also very quick instructions to give you an idea of what is involved had you decide to tackle it. Dex explains very well and probably would give better instructions had you decide to tackle the job. But I too can give better details if u wish. And you can't forget to time your carb after as you will now flow more air out of your saw causing it to take in more air yet the same fuel so you possible could be lean if you run the saw as set currently and DONT ricchen your settings. It is likely that you will need the 'secret proprietary" tool that husqvarna uses to adjust there own screws. And due to an interpretation of the apart law by husqvarna they won't sell you one quoting a $10000 fine.
Sounds like I did a muffler mod by pulling the screen. That increased the exhaust port size, well at lest the amount of air that goes thru it. From you description, that may be enough for my saw to cut 6 to 8 cords per year. Your vivid description was as clear to me as tomato juice. Cutting isn't the slow part of the firewood process. It's not even the time consuming part of getting a trailer load of rounds. Time is in the hand loading, unloading, splitting & stacking. To speed those parts of the process up, I'm the one who needs ported , not the saw. LOL
Here's how we do a 359 muffler. Cut a hole here, behind the baffle. Deburr it, and make relief cuts in the seam for the deflector. Make a deflector by cutting a 3/4" pipe on a sharp angle. Braze it on. And paint with high temp paint.
Glad i found this post! I've already slightly modded the muffler on my 359 and tuned the carb but that port job looks great! Looks like im gonna be on the bench in the shop one night this week. Thanks MM
