Thanks LodgedTree. I can use my buzz saw for large trunks, but wanted the splitter for smaller stuff--say 10 inches in diameter or less.

I would think rather than go to the trouble of building an expensive and rather complicated kinetic energy splitter for small wood, I would go with a rotating splitter, or pitman splitter. Far easier to build, and yet effective. Obviously it could be powered via the PTO of a tractor in either case with a bit of adaption.

This version is almost all wood and relatively safe compared to other designs of it.

Thanks LodgedTree. Both of those are interesting.

I had an American 3pt hitch log splitter that ran off the tractor hydraulics. I find them handy for splitting in the the woods or places you don't want to bring a tow behind log splitter. I did sell that splitter and get a gas 35 ton splitter. I needed to use the tractor more for skidding logs as I was feeding the beast also know as my OWB. I did buy a new 3pt hitch winch from tractor supply last fall that I haven't used yet. My plans are I'll disconnect my bucket next too the pile of wood to split, turn my tractor around and use the splitter and fill the bucket. Once the bucket is full I'll turn the tractor around and hook up the bucket and move the wood into the woodshed

I found an old picture of our old homemade woodsplitter set-up. This is a far better view of some others I have posted on here, and people can see how it was set up. It really worked well because it was a:

Cut a tankful of gas in rounds
Split those rounds and toss them into the trailer (old manure spreader)
    Haul to the house
Stack, off loading the trailer by cranking back the live bed via the lever:

    sort of thing.

It worked well because while work was always being performed, splitting was a break from cutting rounds, driving tractor was a break from splitting, and returning to the pile of wood was a break from stacking, etc.

Note: this is my first wife Tina splitting the wood and not Katie.
