    I do know a guy with a 36" belt sander he uses for cabinets, might be able to buy him some belts and get it smoothed.......

    2-3 years before building........might have to find/build a kiln/dryer,

    I'd say go for it. You could flatten the slabs with a router sled very easily.

    You might be able to CL the whole trunk as well. Chainsaw carvers love big chunks of softwood.
