I am trying to come up with a solution of getting everything i own under a roof without an outbuilding on my suburban lot. My entire house originally had a flat roof - kinda dumb with ~10' a year of snow but hey. My attached garage is block on three sides with 2x10s on 12" centers with an 18' span and a piece of steel in for good measure. The deck is then tongue and groove on the diagonal. The trusses I went over it with create enough height to get my tractor in from the side (i can fill from the side street) but I am curious if this is just one of those really stupid ideas that should just be dismissed? I think the floor is good for the weight and it has a roll roof on it that is in decent shape. But, eventually, I think I am just asking for problems? Any thoughts/experiences either way are appreciated.
I put an attic truss on my garage and gained 600 sq ft. Only cost like $70 per truss extra when I built it
yep, those things rock. My trusses achieved an 11' ceiling height over most of the garage, a 9' cantilevered overhang on the south side that I use for my woodshed and a perfect pitch to optimize net metering for the solar array. I always thought that a barn would be in the mix too but I'm thinking less is more now if I can make it work.
Trusses may be the right way to go. They can be ordered for your exact specs and will be less expensive than traditional framing using 2x8/10's.
Yep I love trusses; they are already up over the garage. I originally intended to put a media room in the space but was up there yesterday thinking my tractor would fit in there with the right door and it would make superinsulating the house a lot simpler.
