This from the 160 psi machine it's pretty sludgey/dirty the curtains match drapes, cylinder has some good wipe. this is on the 140 psi machine. Looks a lot better than the 160. Swapped piston and cylinders from 140 to 160. Got marginally better. I'll throw the handle back on and try it again. Kinda awkward pulling it over just holding cylinder head. Checked squish to see what there for margin. Not much. The lower compression seemed to follow the p/c. Even though it looks a lot better than the higher compression machine. The 160 cylinder has a skirt that fits in the case and doesn't have a decomp valve. Those may be big pluses. Maybe a new base gasket and a Caber ring.
Reconductored and re connectored the one machine the 99 is the one I'm going to focus on. It's cleaner inside and out and hopefully will be a runner with out a complete exploded tear down. Waiting on parts to build it and try a start. The other 288xp will be a complete tear down. I hope.
1992 1999 1999 1992 Learned this morning that really what's on the bench is a 281 on a 288 chasis and 288 on a 288. I bought caber rings for a 288, comes two in a pack and they are for a 54mm. I did some measures and there was a difference. I learned that the 281 is a 52mm and is basically the same saw as the 288 except a smaller p/c.
So, as you were thinking about making the 2 into 1, with extra parts leftover, are you still going to try for one, given the different models and part sizes?
Absolutely. Only two parts are different, the piston and the cylinder. And the 281 set is dodgey anyway. More options to mull over.
yup the 281 was discontinued a few months before the 288 came out,my 288XPW is one of the earlier ones, produced week 31 of 1988.The 2 models were never sold new at the same time
Well, there's a runner! Runs anyway. I don't know how to get video from my phone onto site, otherwise I'd love share that. You'd swear it want to stall but just keeps burping and bobbling along. I tried to put a bar and chain on but my 20" won't fit all the way over the bar studs. So I still don't know how it oils, I didn't even fill the rez. And there's something I don't love about the chain brake. Seems to interfere with the saw handle. Aside from the 5 or so pulls it took to get to pop with the choke on for the first attempt to start it, it started on one pull each time since. And isn't it pretty
