Well today we got home to a very pleasant surprise ! We replaced the gaskets last season and due to how warm last year was we never had a full stove. Last night I filled it the house was freezing. Filled it at 9pm 10/15/13 Opened the air up to keep the coal bed hot at 4:30 am 10/16/13 Got home at 6:10pm 10/16/13 When we got home it was still 170F and there is still coal I didn't even need a lighter to get it going ! This stove rocks....... O yes the house was at 68F as well and it is a bit chilly and wet today so this is impressive stuff.
This is the one that had bad gasket cement Dennis. It has been a fantastic stove now that we figured that out.
When there is a decent coal bed and I want to add a few chunks then yes I do use the top load. It's a great feature and I love it.
Same here! I load from the front when I want to pack the stove but top loading is great for dropping a few in or scraping back the ashes before you open the doors up for a relight.
I cant load from the top but that DEEP box on the BK doesn't have me concerned at all with ashes spilling out. Not at all like my last stove, that US Stove spilled ashes all the time.
Yes I believe that's right, it's really a big difference in how deep that lip is for holding ash and coals.
Talking about long burn times, I put 6 splits in last night at about 10pm on a hot coal bed. The splits were maple, cherry and box elder. Now 12 hours later the cat just dropped below the active zone and still have plenty of coals for a reload. 12 hours on 6 splits of mediocre wood is impressive. Wouldn't have gotten that with a full load on my US Stove.
Must be that alien technology! I put 4 medium size splits of cherry in my IR the other night and 8 hours later the stove was still at 200F with enough coals for a relight. That would have been a record burn in my old resolute!
I have gotten those 20+ hour burn times with my high valley 2500. I even have gotten 12+ hours with pine. I think its the cat that allows it.
