Sorry for delay in responding, I missed your response post somehow. Neither bear was anything to write home about as one was about 170 pounds and the other was around 120. Still processed a good amount of meat from both. My uncle had been hunting all his life (mostly elk and whitetail) however at 84, this was his first black bear so it was a good time.
Shot this buck last Friday. Coming trotting through the woods, managed to stop it with some grunts, rushed my 24 yard shot with the crossbow, but got lucky and hit the spine.
Son with a Rocky Mountain Elk, taken with a bow in Eastern Oregon. All the more impressive when you learn he's 6'3".
Went out to get a couple white tail does, got one and while looking for another I ran across this guy with his 5 does. Didn’t have a tag that allowed for a buck, so back to town to get a tag online. Purchased the tag at 9:30 and an hour and a half later I was getting back in the pickup to go get him photographed dressed and loaded.
My old man is 70, he shot this one last week with a compound bow on state land from the ground. It’s no monster compared to what’s been posted but on the state land we hunt you only see decent bucks once in a great while. They don’t get real big eating acorns and winter green. Had to drag him out about 3/4 mile through the woods. I think my old man handled it better than me.
Hunting from the ground is tough, bow hunting from the ground is more tough, bow hunting from the ground on public land is probably about as tough as it can get. Tell your old man great job on that!
Fantastic buck!! You did a great job photographing him, too. Nice model 70 Featherweight! What caliber?
Thanks. That one is a 7mm WSM, I’ve got almost all the featherweights that were made in New Haven. Only missing 2
Opening weekend in Arkansas. Weather didn’t cooperate for a great bounty, but it was fun. Now to find recipes for speckle belly goose breast
