At cabin: 4 cords css dry (sugar maple. black ash and paper birch); 2 cords css sugar maple and paper birch seasoning for 2 years out; 1 cord dry css poplar, with a smattering of balsam, spruce and alder, for shoulder seasons and fire pit; and 1 cord of fairly green poplar that is seasoning for next year. I cut the poplar, black ash and some of the birch on our land, and the sugar maple and some birch is purchased from my neighbor. At home: 1.5 cord of css dry sugar maple and birch for our weekend fires in our hearth when it gets really cold outside. We usually don't burn much of that until Christmas, through the end of February, into early March.
Agreed, great question! Great thread. I’d love to see the stats from this one in excel graphs. But I’m not doing it. I’ve got about 10 c/s and piled. Another 6 c/s/s in the shed. Hoping the snow can hold until I can another 3 or 4 on the pile. We go through about 4.5/season.
Midwinter, you probably recall seeing these stacks. They are now gone and I did think about taking an inventory to see how much we have on hand but really don't know for sure. I'll have to do that soon, but don't think we are in danger of running out soon. I have to laugh because years ago people were aghast seeing how much wood we had on hand. Now we are on the lower end when I look to see how much others have on hand, but it makes me proud!
This thread needs more pics! 1.5 cords Current stack I'm adding to about 2 cords Holzhausen about 9 cords On deck for ths winter about 4 cords
Just remember - it was that guy with the hounds that wanted pics in this thread - A tour of my wood yard. Some almost 3-yr white oak. Some recently stacked red oak. Top layers noodled Some white birch and maple - cut this past spring A double row of popular. Cut last fall. A double rack of 3, 8-foot racks. IE: 2 cord a triple rack, of 2, 8-foot racks - also 2 cord. Double 8-foot stacks of red oak - 2 yr double rack of 3, 8 foot racks - 2 cord My main "pull from" for this winter. Mix of beech, maple, and oak. racks of red oak. About 10 foot long More red oak - empty rack I'm working on dealing with that! Oh look!! Red oak!! More red oak. load of presumed Sugar maple, from WeldrDave's new place. small rack of small limbs, cut th-th-that's all folks!!!
4.5 cords for this winter at my house. I am moving in the spring, so I sold off the wood I won't burn. Too far to transport and I most likely won't have a wood burner for a few years. <--Booo, down vote this post! I will still be maintaining my uncles woods and helping to gather the six cord he burns per year.
That's impressive on your small lot! I have 20+ CSS here...easily another 5 cord dead standing in the woods at work...and with the EAB having gone through here in the last 5 years, many of the Ash are just falling over now...so there's probably 2-3 cords of that dead/dry 6-8" diameter Ash laying on the ground (or hung up) in the woods too. I need to get in there and get that before the ground gets too soft in the late winter/spring...a lot less briars and undergrowth to deal with in the winter too...its a pretty thick woods, have to haul stuff out with small 4x4 tractor, or ATV and trailer.
Shawn T. No more time off until rifle season. I let everything walk during black powder. Here is a link to the highlight of my season for the past few years. youth-day-2019 Freezer isn't hurting, so I can hunt bucks this year.
3 cords in garage/basement 3 cords outside shed top covered 6 cords in shed 40 acres of unprocessed cords still growing in woods
About 8 Cut/split/stacked, and maybe 1 more cord of rounds, cut but not stacked, etc. Should burn about 3-4 this year so not quite at the 3 year plan but getting closer. Winter has arrived early and with a vengeance.
I am at about 5 cords ready to burn this year. About 4 cords needing to be split for next year. I know I am behind....darn honey do list....Starting to get scared. I am contemplating buying a cord or two of hopefully seasoned wood for a safety net so I don't get screwed in February when everything around me is not seasoned.
I have 4 cord for this year and 9 more CSS for the future. I need to get to at least 15 before I start feeling comfortable. Great thread Midwinter! 16 cord is very impressive on a small lot especially. No doubt you are the queen of firewood hoarders.
