I like to drill the wood just a tad bigger than the fastener. Give it room to move a tad, I’ve had a few tight screws strip off at the wood steel interface. ... Waiting to see the finished deck
if you look at the recommended screws they have "wings" near the tip that make the hole in the wood larger than the fastener.
Never built one but I will comment the Horkn have me the name of a hardware supplier a few years ago that had pricing much more reasonable than fastenal. Don't remember the name and I had it saved to my favorites on a computer that died. Not cutting on fastenal as I have bought from them as well.
Good point! You are correct about the PT reacting with the steel.. I completely forgot about that...electrolysis.
Was it this thread? Installed a new combustor scoop McMaster Carr has it all. Although there's less expensive places to buy from, they have it all and ship fast.
I’ll second or third the suggestion for white oak. See if a local mill can make you up 20 footers. No butt joints.
Ok white oak it is .. I need to pick thru the ruff sawed oak . I have 24 2x8 8footers . Might be enough . But now what do I treat them with ? What stain or paint ? And use what 5/16 -3 1/4 Steel decking screws. At this point bit extra weight. No big deal going for years of wood hauling . Sent from my LGL84VL using Tapatalk
We got 2 1/2 gallons of Herculiner because it has polyurethane in it . It lasts a bit longer . But still scratching head how much it covers . Might be a spendy paint job . Sent from my LGL84VL using Tapatalk
I would use rough sawn white oak. If the boards haven't seasoned for a year good luck getting anything to penetrate them /do much good. Hot sunny day next Summer coat with oil, diesel fuel, ATF or go crazy boiled linseed oil $$$. Or nothing. grey weathered white oak looks like a trailer deck.
Always loved McMaster Carr. We used them all the time in our NYC Commercial buildings. Order today have it tomorrow.
The 2x8. 8 ft are season for 21 years there at peak hardness. Need to know the best thing I can put on its going right in there its so dry. It will dull the drill bit when I drill for deck screws Sent from my LGL84VL using Tapatalk
I have redecked many trailers and I prefer the way eager beaver trailers uses heavy conical washers and carriage bolts to hold the deck boards to the frame the bolt goes through the wood and next to the channel then the washer clamps the wood to the channel you do not have the holes in your frame crossmembers that way the washers are @2" and 1/4 inch thick I have decked a couple of trailers with black locust also good luck with your project JB
Coat it with drain oil or nothing at all. Unless it constantly has a lot of mud on it, it will outlast you either way. Probably goes without saying but make sure you put the crown of the board facing up.
Ok now you got me thinking about the carage bolts and 2 inch washers . What size carriage bolts do they use ? And I need find place to buy them washers . Are they regular flat washers ? Thats like a perfect idea . I got pic off there website. Sent from my LGL84VL using Tapatalk
