I've always heard a lot about Ash, good btu's and drys pretty quickly. Thought to myself I never see any Ash around my neck of the woods until early yesterday morning got a CL alert for free firewood. Low and behold it was a Ash!! I was onsite within 20 minutes of getting the email!! Pic isn't very good, but my truck bed is pretty full with rounds, some nice bigger ones towards the front of the bed you can't see. Not a huge load but hey I'll take it!! Glad I didn't return the splitter back to my brother in law just yet.....
Splitter not mandatory with ash, let it sit a couple of weeks, and it splits easy by axe. Great score.
just dropped a dead ash...got about a half a cord out of it....i really like it for shoulder season..
Chuck, you will like the ash. It is one of the easiest splitting wood there is. But do not believe it when people say you can burn it right away. Well, of course you could but it will not burn as nicely as it should. Generally the moisture of green ash is around 35% but it loses the moisture fairly rapidly. If you split now you may be able to burn that late in the winter or next spring. Much better if you can wait until next fall but I know your situation and that you might need it. Enjoy.
Thank you for the excellent info Dennis as always!! It was part of the reason why I snatched it up so quick as well, looking to split it quick so if I need to in a pinch I can use it late winter. We will see how things go, I'd like to wait till next season if I can. Looking to buy a little wood possibly however coming up short all these guys so far are selling unseasoned wood around here. I checked in with two of them so far! One fella said his oak cord was almost a year old and the other said his mm reading was 28%. I have wood dryer then that so am not gonna pay for it!

Great burning wood, dries fast, splits well. Just kill those little green bugs (emerald ash borers) so they don't go and destroy more trees. I even debark the wood if there is evidence of the borers. They have been taking every ash tree down here in PA in the state parks to slow down the critters.
Hey saewoody I will send you a PM on how to setup a saved search. It does indeed come in handy, a lot of tree guys in my area while they are cutting it up with throw an ad up. I put the search within 5 miles of my house and if I get a hit I know it's super close and can usually cash in especially if it good stuff. Free wood on CL around here is very common, we have a lot of trees in the neighborhoods coming down from storms or just because folks are getting rid of them. Very few people burn wood in these parts, there are some but not many!! Hec I didn't even think about that, I had the load still in the back of my truck, actually drove to work with it yesterday. LN I got a chance to unload it and it was pretty cloudy and getting dark couldn't see much but I will check it out for sure.
