I read somewhere that i can use the flywheel without the key as its just for lining things up properly. If so whats the proper procedure for making sure its tight enough next time?

 

I use a cordless impact and hold the flywheel by hand the quick hits from the impact get it tighter than hand tools. The taper of the crank and flywheel will mate and get tight but keeping it there without the key in while tightening I think would be challenging.

 

Yes it was cast into the flywheel. Cutting a key may be beyond my abilities.

Ill definitely use an impact when im ready to reinstall.

Careful with the impact. If you overdo it you can break the crank, and then the saw is junk.

 

I've had luck using loctite on the crank to hold the flywheel tight after it sets up you may get away tightening the nut without the crank moving a little bit.

 

Luckily I dont own an impact. Once i get a plan together ill have my buddy thats a ford tech do it!

 

The 3/8 drive battery powered ones are really nice and don't make enough torque to snap stuff off that easily.

 

Dont be afraid of the impact wrenches !! They are very handy when used properly

 

I would stuff a rope in the spark plug hole to hold the crank and tighten by hand as to keep the key lined up. Make sure crank and flywheel are clean of oil or it won't hold

I got the flywheel lined up without the key and properly torqued the nut. Fired on the first pull and runs great.
