If I was cutting softwoods I would agree, but some of this maple and oak is hard, especially when it is on the dryer side.
The 550 husqvarna is the equivalent of the 261, I wouldn't hesitate on that either.
My vote is an MS 261. Smaller, lighter and as much if not more power than the 290.
I'm a fan of faster saws. I have a ported 026 it wears a 16" .325 8 pin , My ported MS440 carries a 20" 3/8" with an 8 pin sprocket, my 395 wears...
Those have more BTU's than bass wood as they usually gave some grease left in them from the pizza.
