Shoulder season wood at best. It does leave a lot of ash and I don’t remember it putting out the heat of cherry ash or maple.
Never burned sassafras but gum is terrible to split. Now that you’ve done it though may as we’ll burn it but keep it dry and off the ground....
As you can see from my username red oak has been my favorite firewood for years. With what I have available it puts out the most heat by far....
I voted for Red Oak, sugar maple, white ash, and black locust. Red oak used to be 95% of my stacks. It splits easy, I love the smell, it puts...
Good thread! I split by hand as I don’t own any hydraulics. I have mostly oak, ash, and maple so most of it splits pretty easily. I use a...
I really enjoy hand splitting October - April. I can split an hour or so at a time when I feel like it. Going to keep doing it this way as long...
I hand split but after 10 minutes or so one one piece it gets set aside for the chainsaw. Chainsaw doesn’t mind those knots at all!
I’m with others that say split the maple and oak smaller and mix in those pieces throughout. I doubt you’ll notice a piece or two of less...
52 this morning! AC off and windows open last night. House was a cool 65 this morning - love it! Fire is still a month or so away though.
A neighbor gave me an elm tree years ago - I remember it being tough to split by hand. I think I had to break out the metal wedge and sledge...
No I don’t go looking for shoulder season wood but I always seem to find it. If I’m cutting up an oak and a few pieces have some punk - well that...
Man I’d kill for it just to get up to 80 degrees! Been in the 90s for awhile here and we’ve got awhile to go.
I’m about 6 years ahead and my goal now is to just replace what I burn each year. That said I did wind up cutting a good bit more in March and...
Most of what I burn is red oak but I have some pine and sugar maple I’d like to use first, bit to mention over a cord of chunks and uglies.
I had oak stacked outside for 5 years uncovered and it was definitely showing signs of going bad. My issue was that I had 10 rows stacked...
I cover mine in September or early October. Or at least I try to remember to.
Top cover only with metal or rubber roofing. Or leave outside for a year or two and then move into a woodshed for a year or two before burning.
I think the warped one lasted at least 6 years - got two plates this time so hopefully I’ll be good for awhile. Never realized how important a...
Hi All - recently been doing some summer jobs and one of those is a close inspection of my stove, pipe, and cleaning the chimney of course....
If nothing else it could be fire pit or campfire wood. Looks like some would be ok for firewood but you won’t know until it’s cut. If it’s not...
