Never had any elm, but it works for the pine and maple I work on regularly.

I burn red maple almost exclusively. It tends to twist while growing which can make splitting tough.
I'd just keep wearing them as is. After all, this is winter in New England where they douse the roads with salt. Those pants won't be rusting out...
