Cant say ive seen a shellbark in person or if they even grow around here. Ive seen seemingly hybrids of pignut and shag.

I could be wrong as i dont have a lot of experience with basswood, but ive come to notice how the gray bark, when damaged is brown underneath.
Splits very easily, dries fast, light weight, low btu's. Great SS wood though. He'll love splitting it.
