Yeah BL is a pleasure to hand split and does generate a lot of shards. I always have an empty feed bag handy when splitting it.

I split my bundle wood on the smaller side but still 16" long. I get roughly 175 8x8" size bundles from a cord split that size.

One downside is that hickory doesnt have a good "shelf life" once dead/down. The heartwood looks solid though.
