There are MANY good pellet stoves out there. Lack of proper maintenance and cleaning is usually the owners fault and results in poor "reviews"....
IMO, the fireplace isn't a good option anyway for "back-up" heat....the great majority of the heat goes up the chimney, unlike a woodstove.
