piece of PVC pipe ( 16 inches) and a lumber crayon or chalk for me. Pipe is white so a little harder to lose. Inexpensive and works just fine.
I know exactly where that is. Very unique brick house across the street. Sure there is some history there.
Way too much smoke ( for me anyway) to use green. Maybe a couple chunks on charcoal in something like a weber kettle but not for me in a stick...

I do my own starting with a brisket and cure it. It is not hard and is so much better than a store bought piece. Try it. You won’t be disappointed

I bought a cheap/used miter saw from a local papers for sale ads. I use it for cutting splits for the cooker. $25 well spent
