Having a good woodshed and getting it under cover before the rains hit in the fall. Also helps to have a two or three year supply ahead of time....
This chunk fell across the trail and when I went to cut it I was surprised it wasn’t punky. Good solid wood ready to haul when the trail dries out...

Negatives: Gotta be careful with it as unseasoned it creates a lot of creosote. Doesn’t burn long and is fast to rot if left on the ground too...
