I've seen them early in the season on fresh cut Beech also. With low food sources I guess they'll try anything that gives them any nourishment.
Don't take the chance and cut it down. Leave it there for me!

I would think that letting the tree lay with the leaves on(green) until they wither would help. Just like flowers in a vase that is full of water...
