High of 74 F (24 C) here in St. Louis. Only thing I'm burning is my skin, while I'm sitting outside in the sun admiring my wood pile.

There's always more space to be found. Even if its a free find of sweet gum.
Sweet gum balls are a good firestarter when brown. Others have mentioned the same with pine cones in other posts.

I would say persimmon is not higher than hickory or locust.
Black cherry is an all around score. Seasons fast, good for burning and good for smoking.
