Thanks everyone! This was in CT, if I didn’t see the leaves I’d have to say sassafras, so I think that’s the verdict.

I just skimmed that article. No talk of sassafras as an excellent kindling wood. Total missed opportunity, lol.
You will love the black birch. All the BTU’s of Oak with about half the drying time. It’s my favorite.

The last set of pics the wood looks to me like Sassafras, but I would expect the bark to be a little bit thicker for that.
