Ashes work great but that is the downside.
Give it a sniff. Looks like Black Walnut. The sapwood seems to be a bit thicker than it should be, though.
Is it still a bit stringy? I’ve had some Shagbark split fairly easy and some that was tough and stringy even in cold winter temperatures.
