I pull out pine and other softwood and anything punky for shoulder season. I also have separate bins for kindling. Most of the rest is oak anyway.
I split by hand so a variety of sizes based on how easy wood is to split. Bigger pieces have their place for overnight, campfire, etc.
Never had a moisture meter here. Would have been useful when I first started burning but now that I am 4-5 years ahead I don’t need one....

24 months are better and 36 are better still. The wood will hit a point where it’s moisture content settles if it is outside and top-covered....

Chimney actually wasn’t that bad but I mostly remember worrying about overfiring with the draft wide open and using much more wood.
