I hear Apple is a bear to split by hand though, doesn't know how to grow straight.
Even with knots it pops apart with little effort by hand. I would split a chord of red maple before I'd split a chord of oak.
I see this with my neighbors. All of them have at least 15 chord in stacks and burn about 4 a year.
Up here I'd recommend 16" since that what a face chord figures a split length is. 3 face chords equals a full chord.
For a hardwood you can't beat the drying time. Looks pretty in the stacks too.:D
Yeah I've noticed the stuff I have dries pretty quick. While not as high on the btu chart as sugar maple I still wouldn't pass up an opportunity...
